Pssst…. Want a smarter brain?

One of the most interesting and informative books I’ve read recently is Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain.  From author John J Ratey, MD, this thing is just a fantastic read. The following is directly from the link above:

“SPARK is a groundbreaking exploration of the connection between exercise and the brain’s performance that shows how even moderate exercise will supercharge mental circuits to beat stress, sharpen thinking, enhance memory, and much more.  SPARK will change forever the way you think about your morning run—or, for that matter, simply the way you think.

And here’s a sneak peak from inside the book:

If this doesn’t get you excited about reading the book I don’t know what will!

Chapters in Spark

What I absolutely love about this book is that it’s data driven!  You will find references to large scientific studies that backup every claim that is made and additionally you will find case studies that you will have to read twice to believe.  The book is laid out in such a way that you don’t need to read it sequentially if you don’t want to.  I would definitely start with chapter 1 to get a foundation of the science that the rest of the book builds on, but from there you can jump to a number of specific compartmentalized topics. In each case you will learn about the specific brain functions associated with the topic at hand an how exercise can have a positive impact including references to studies comparing the impact of exercise versus medication in many cases.  This particular story from The New York Times is not from the book however you will find several just like it as you wander through the pages: Prescribing Exercise to Treat Depression as well as many others for the other conditions mentioned above.

Here’s a few examples of his work from his website:

Just saw this on CNN, nice short supporting article: It’s time to get your brain in shape
