Are we going to run out of gyms in the next 50 years???

So I’m only half joking here of course, check out this graph from Health: The Basics:

population

I know, crazy right? The U.N. estimates that that world population of about 7 billion in 2012 could grow to 9.3 billion by 2050 and over 10 billion by 2100! I don’t know about you but when I think of environmental issues the number one thing that jumps out at me is Climate Change and not population growth. These estimates should really make you think.  From the same source, its estimated that global demand for natural resources has doubled since 1996.  One report estimates that by the year 2030 it will take two planets worth of resources to meet the needs of our estimated population.  Wait, how far away is that? Right.

Here’s sort of a fun fact along those same lines from statistica.  Yeah, its a little hard to read so I’ll tell ya that it says we were at close to 35,000 gyms in the United States in 2014 up from 30,000 in 2008 so not exactly exploding linearly with population but still… OK it doesn’t mean much of anything but I bet you didn’t know how many gyms were were out there now did ya?

gyms

So back to population growth.  There is a lot of interesting reading out as the potential impacts of growth estimates like these are as far reaching as you can impinge.  Its also interesting to see how some countries are legislating for Zero Population Growth.  Check out sites like Population Connection for more information….
